If a woman catches rubella, sometimes called German measles, in the first few months of pregnancy the viral infection may cause an abortion or a still-birth. If the baby is born alive there is a chance it may have defects affecting the eyes, ears or nervous system. Mothers should make sure they are innoculated against the virus.
